Pre-Operative Center & Surgery Preparation

Doctor

Once your surgery has been scheduled, the following will occur:

Informed consent. In the surgeon's office, you will be asked to sign a consent for your scheduled procedure. This consent will be reviewed with you again on the day you have surgery. If the patient is under the age of 18 or has an appointed guardian, the consent must be signed by the legal guardian after discussion with the surgeon either in person or on the phone. If the legal guardian will not be present on the day of surgery, a nurse will make contact before that day to get the proper consent.

History and physical (H&P). A pre-operative physical needs to be done within 30 days of your procedure. Make sure you know if the surgeon's office is arranging this or giving you the responsibility to schedule this appointment.

Pre-Operative Center. The Pre-Operative Center (POC) has a staff that coordinates all the necessary steps in your pre-operative process. A nurse from the POC will contact you by phone for an interview or to schedule a POC visit to start your admission, review your health history, give instructions about taking your medications, help make a plan for you following your procedure, and inform you of what will happen during your time at Lake Region Healthcare. The POC is open Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call the POC staff at 218.736.8049 if you have any questions about your surgery or procedure.

Medications. Follow the instructions that your doctor(s) or the POC nurse have given you. Stop taking any anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Aleve, etc.) seven (7) days before surgery unless otherwise instructed. You should not stop medications like Coumadin or Plavix without talking to your primary doctor. A Thrifty White Pharmacy is located on the first floor of our main clinic and an Instymeds Machine is also available in Same Day Surgery for your convenience.

Parents. If your child is having surgery and you have other children, please make other arrangements for their care so that you can focus on the patient before and after the procedure.

Transportation. Arrange for a responsible adult to take you home after your procedure. A cab or bus is not an approved method of transportation home after having anesthesia or sedation.

The Day of Your Surgery

Please bathe or shower as instructed. This may be done the evening before. Wear comfortable clothing. Remove all jewelry and body piercings and leave at home. Do not bring anything valuable to the hospital.

Remember to bring:

  • Insurance card and a photo ID.
  • Advance directive (living will) if you have one.
  • Medications you were instructed to bring (e.g, insulin, inhalers, eyedrops).
  • Crutches, cane or walker if needed.
  • Constant Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), if you use one.

When you arrive at the hospital. Check in at the admission desk in the hospital lobby. Once the registration process is complete, someone will bring you to Same Day Surgery (SDS) on the first floor. Please be on time to keep your place on the surgery schedule. Late arrivals may need to be postponed. You will typically be asked to come about two or more hours before you go in for surgery. During these two hours, we will be preparing you for surgery by:

  • Completing registration.
  • Dressing you for surgery and securing your belongings.
  • Completing the clinical admission.
  • Possible lab, EKG or other additional testing that may be necessary.
  • Spending time with a nurse anesthetist (CRNA) to explain the anesthesia process.
  • Starting your intravenous line, if needed.
  • Giving you necessary medication (eyedrops, sedation or antibiotics).
  • Respiratory therapy visit, if needed.
  • Performing any necessary surgical site prep.
  • Giving the surgeon time to visit with you and mark your surgical site if needed.
