Both patients and medical staff at the Lake Region Center for Rehabilitation share the same goal: for the patients to be able to go home. Home might be a house, an apartment or an assisted living facility, but the intensive therapy offered at the Center for Rehabilitation is focused on helping patients return to community living.
The 14-bed center, which opened in 2001, offers a level of care available in few rehab facilities outside the Twin Cities. It's an acute rehabilitation unit, meaning that patients require a high level of medical attention and rehabilitation services. Each of the patients has a private room, and the Center for Rehabilitation is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.
The center's medical director is James Andrews, DO, a physiatrist trained in physical medicine and rehabilitation. The specialized staff providing comprehensive services includes:
The center's team approach is apparent, as the team meets daily to discuss each patient's progress, answer questions and consider whether adjustments are needed in treatment. Andrews and fellow staff members also do "walking rounds" for patients, visiting each in his or her room every Monday morning.
Patients prepare for their return to the community in a bright, spacious gym area. A unique feature is the community living training space, with its walkway with flooring sections of tile, bricks, decking and carpeting. Steps leading to the doorway give patients the chance to learn how to navigate steps and do everyday tasks, such as opening a screen door. The apartment within the center means that, as patients near their discharge date, they can stay in the apartment with family members and practice for their return home.
