Jasey Olsen finishes in top 8% in North America to advance to Semifinals last weekend

[Fergus Falls, MN] CrossFit Fergus Falls athlete, Jasey Olsen, made history at the local affiliate this month by qualifying for and competing in the semi-final round of the CrossFit Open. The CrossFit Open (the Open) is the largest participatory sporting event in the world, setting a record of more than 415,000 participants across 172 countries in 2018. The 2021 Open, held over the course of three weeks in March, was the most accessible in CrossFit history. The event his year included flexible options for participants to compete either at their local gym or at home, should they face local pandemic-related closures or health concerns.

In announcing the event this year, Dave Castro, GM of Sport for CrossFit said, “The last year has been tough for everyone, so we wanted to kick off the 2021 season with a compelling and accessible Open that can meet the needs of every athlete in the world. Whether you’re surrounded by people in your local gym, working out alone at home, or listening to friends cheer over Zoom, the Open will energize you and remind you why you are part of CrossFit.”

Based on The Open rank by continent, the top 10% of the individuals in each division moved on to the semifinal round. Olsen finished in the top 8% in the North American Continent by taking 870th place out of 12,029 women ages 35-39 in the CrossFit Open qualifying her for the semifinal events.

Semifals were held this past weekend. Olsen competed in five high intensity events over three days that included handstand pushups, rowing, pistol squats, rope climbs, barbell work, and more. While she will not qualify for the CrossFit Games, her effort and fitness in the gym are impressive and do not go unnoticed.

Olsen participates in CrossFit classes at CrossFit Fergus Falls four times a week. Her journey started five years ago and she participated in her first CF Open in 2017. The first workout of The Open that year was repeated as the second workout in this year’s Open. Her dedication in the gym is apparent by her improved performance. Four years ago she did not complete the workout in the allotted time of 20:00 and this year she finished it in 15:37.

“Jasey is a true testament of lifelong fitness. She comes in, pushes herself, and takes care of her body. Her increased fitness over time reflects the true value of CrossFit and physical fitness,” said CrossFit Fergus Falls coach, Karoline Gustafson. “CrossFit can be very intimidating but, even in Jasey’s case, she wasn’t able to do a pull-up when she first came in, had no idea what any of the workouts meant, and now she’s competing in the next stage of CrossFit competition. Anyone at any level can benefit and improve.”
