(Fergus Falls, MN) Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of their 2018 Healthcare Professions Scholarships. Abby Fisher, Ellyn Hexum, Kaitlyn Neville and Emily Westergard have each been selected by the Foundation to receive a five thousand dollar scholarship.
“We are so pleased to recognize these students for their persistence, hard work and passion for the field of medicine,” said Foundation Vice Chair, Andrew Yaggie. “We are glad to be able to help local students with the financial side of pursing medical careers and hopefully encourage them to bring their skills back home someday as well,” he said. This was the third year of the LRH Foundation Healthcare Professions Scholarship program. “Thanks to a gift to the Lake Region Healthcare Foundation from the Communicating for Agriculture Education Foundation, we were able to expand the number of recipients this year as well,” Yaggie added.
About the Recipients
Abby Fisher is pursuing her Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology. In her application Abby stated “One of my professional goals is to play an instrumental role for treatment of clients with special needs and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders. It is my goal after graduation to move back home to the Fergus Falls area, where my interest in Speech-Language Pathology and Special Education first began. I want to be able to give back to the community who helped me develop into the professional I am today.”
Ellyn Hexum is finishing her second year in the Physician Assistant program at Augsburg University. She explains in her application, “I hope to someday provide quality health care to the LRH service area. I believe that as a future medical provider who was able to live and grow up in rural Minnesota, I will be able to work to provide not only medical care, but also a personalized understanding to patients.”
Kaitlyn Neville is in the Physical Therapy program at Mayo Clinic School of Health Science. She told the committee she plans to get involved in her community by, “advocating for an active and healthy lifestyle.” She added, “Overall, I hope to be a source of fun and creative ways to improve energy and increase daily activity within the community I call home.”
Emily Westergard earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine this spring. Emily said “First and foremost, it is very important to me to return to a rural MN community like Fergus Falls and provide excellent care to the people that helped mold me into the person I am today. It has been an incredible privilege to provide care to the Fergus Falls community and surrounding areas during my time as a medical student, and I cannot wait for the opportunity to continue to care for these amazing individuals as I create my own future practice.”
The 2019 scholarship applications will be available in March on the Lake Region Healthcare’s website under Foundation. Past applicants who have not received scholarship awards are encouraged to re-apply.
